How to Use a Leaf Blower Efficiently
Work smarter, not harder
A leaf blower saves huge amounts of time — but good technique makes it even faster and easier. Here’s how to clear your yard efficiently.
Blow with the wind
Always work in the same direction as any breeze, letting the wind help carry the leaves rather than fighting it. Blowing against the wind just scatters them back.
Gather into one pile
Work systematically, pushing leaves towards a single collection point or corner. Move in rows or sweep inwards so you build one neat pile instead of scattering several.
Use the right power setting
Use a lower setting for delicate areas (like flower beds and gravel) to avoid blasting them around, and higher power for big or stubborn piles. Many blowers have variable speed for this.
Clear dry leaves when possible
Dry leaves are light and easy to move; wet, matted leaves are heavy and stick to the ground. If you can, clear on a dry day for far less effort.
Angle the nozzle correctly
Hold the nozzle at a slight downward angle, a little above the ground, to lift and push leaves forward rather than just stirring them up.
Get into corners and edges
Use focused airflow to push leaves out of corners, along walls, and from under bushes — spots a rake struggles to reach.
Collect and compost
Once piled, bag the leaves or add them to your compost. If your blower has a vacuum/mulch function, use it to shred and collect them in one step.
